How to get involved?

Neighbours Aotearoa is about connecting with the people around you in your neighbourhood and community. There are so many ways you and your neighbourhood can take part - it can be as big or small as you want to make it. For 2023, we're encouraging people to organise an activity or event around the theme Let's Share.

Tools to support you

• Link up with a connector in your area. They can offer support or advice about taking part
• Download our activity toolkit. This has editable invites and posters to help you promote your event or activity
• We're happy to promote your activity or event! All you need to do is register it and we will pop it up on our website

‍‍Ways you can share with your neighbours

‍Share a hello to a neighbour/ smile to people

…a ride start a carpool initiative or give someone a lift

…a story bring a kids book to the playground and offer to tell a story, start a neighbourhood storybook to collect stories about your community

… a book invite people to share their favourite book, start a book club, little library, book swap or do some book crossing

…kai have a dinner/lunch/brunch/breakfast with someone, start a pātaka kai or drop a jar of jam at the neighbours, organise a community picnic, potluck, beach BBQ

…space organise a ‘open garden’ event where neighbours can visit

….a cuppa morning or afternoon tea with a neighbour or a group of friends

….skills start a skills-share contact list of neighbours, a timebank, offer a free workshop at your local cafe or community centre, help someone get better at using their phone or computer

…tools share your tools or start a tool library or repair cafe in your neighbourhood

‍…the load organise a working bee or waste reduction project to clean up the neighbourhood. Share the tip-run with others, organise shared child chare

…compost start a communal compost container

...play time get the community together for a treasure hunt, a dress-up party,  sing-along or ask the kids how they want to play with their neighbourhood

…wellbeing offer a yoga or fitness class or another way to move together, a hike or a swim

Register your idea

By registering your idea, we can see all the wonderful neighbourhood activities and connections being made across Aotearoa. We can also support you with tools, promote your event if it is for the general public and link you up to your local connector.
